Changing Your Story

When you choose to change yourself the very first thing you encounter is resistance in others. This is because they have a story about you that was put together from experiencing you over and over again from the past -they are very much attached to that story of you and when you show up different from that story you occur to them as "wrong" or "broken."

To us we made a different choice. We chose to use the tool of discipline to workout everyday to get healthier or stopped using foul language so we can be more professional, or we stopped telling dirty jokes to live our lives in a more powerful way. When we do this the other person doesn't know that.

The easiest way for us to change and have it work in our communities around us is to first address these stories and then let them know that you are changing the story. When you change your story (of who you are) without changing the community story of who you are you confuse and frighten people and produce breakdowns in your relationships.

I made a decision one time to pursue my own company so I first had a conversation with my current company I was involved with. I told them how much I loved working with them and that right now I felt a need to go it on my own. To produce a new company in the world that was different because I had a different focus for myself. I also couldn't find another company that resonated with that focus so I chose to start my own.

By having this conversation I was able to explain to them what I was up to and why and they got the change and accepted where I was and it was really easy. I offered to do what I could do to leave powerfully and not badly. It worked well because I understand the power of people's stories. It is the biggest reason why change occurs so difficult for people. It is because they don't get the power of other people's stories.
