Newton’s first law of motion states, "An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."
George’s first law of business states, “A business in mediocrity tends to stay in mediocrity and a business in motion tends to stay in motion with the same results, speed and direction unless acted upon by an outside influence.”
Can you see the correlation between these two laws?
When a business is existing within the context of mediocrity or is creating a certain level of results, this business will usually keep at this level of results or mediocrity –no matter what the leader does, says, or thinks. For some, this is a great reality because their business is doing very well and will continue to do well and for others this reality sucks because their business sucks and has been sucking over the last few years.
Business Coaching can be the “outside influence” that can interrupt the present course of your business and set it on fire. Business Coaching is about interrupting business as usual and confronting the leader of that business with their own acceptance of mediocrity and how much more is possible than they originally thought. Nothing is wrong with leaders and they are not somehow missing anything at all. The fact of the human condition is that we are all susceptible to resigning into mediocrity. The other thing about mediocrity is that it is different for every individual and for every organization. Some of us operate at a dynamic level of effectiveness and by others’ opinions we are really amazing and effective but to us we are not playing full out in life. We are resigned to mediocrity. To admit that to anybody (especially someone who is less effective in life than us) means to be ridiculed and we end up looking bad. And nobody likes to look bad.
So, if you know you are not playing full out in life then you are in mediocrity. And you will stay in your mediocrity unless you are acted upon by an outside influence. Not an inside influence. People within your organization and your circle of influence share your context of life and how things work. This is all designed –mostly unintentionally- to reinforce the current state of mediocrity that you are in. What happens when you have a skilled Business Coach is that they are able to interrupt your current mediocrity to bring forth new realms of possibility. The coach isn’t smarter than you or even more skilled per se, but the strength in the coaching relationship lies in the coach being outside of your current context. When you allow yourself to be influenced by an outside force you take your first step towards unprecedented results that you currently think is IMPOSSIBLE to attain. This is how it’s done.
