What is it about certain businesses that makes them extraordinary?
I believe that it is because those businesses operate IN a different conversation than the majority of other companies. When I say IN a conversation what I am referring to is the context of a corporations way of being. Conversations shape who we are and how we show up as individuals and they also shape how companies show up in the world.
According to best selling author, speaker, and Business Coach Ruben Guzman says that there are two different conversations that separate the ordinary person from the extraordinary person and they are…
The Ordinary Person has conversations around wants, desires, judgments, assessments, concerns, and complaints.
The Extraordinary Person has conversations around their word, promises, commitments, agreements, integrity, and responsibility.
When this transfers over into the domain of business you get 2 very different companies…
The Ordinary Company is based around their own wants and desires –the motivation to make a profit becomes all consuming, they are focused on their own judgments, assessments, concerns, and complaints. This means that they think they have the answer and rarely look outside of themselves for opinions, information, or feedback. Even if they have programs in place like customer feedback programs –their internal conversation keeps them from even “seeing” any type of comments or judgments that go contrary to their own beliefs, concerns, or judgments. This kind of company is basically focused on themselves.
The Extraordinary Company is based around sound ethical business practices, they value their word, their guarantee and the commitments made to their customers and shareholders. They do what they say they are going to do and often go over and above the call of duty. Ultimately, this type of organization is focused outside of themselves. They are actively engaged in the practice of taking responsibility. This type of business will grow.
So what kind of person are you? And most importantly, what kind of person do you WANT to be???
