Unquestioned and unchallenged thoughts cause suffering.
Byron Katie is an amazing person who is so fearless in her work and life. She teaches people like you and me to question our thoughts. The automatic thoughts that come to us without us even trying. It is an amazing practice that Katie calls "The Work." It consists of 4 questions and what she says "The Turnaround."
They are...
1. Is it true?
2. Can you absolutely know that its true?
3. How do you react/treat others when you believe that this thought is true?
4. Who would you be without that thought?
The turnaround is about creating the opposite of the thought and then trying it on as if it is just as true or truer than the original thought.
For example, I may have the thought "I want Bob to be nice to me." Then a turnaround is "I want to be nice to Bob." Or "I want to be nice to me." Then you look for how this statement is just as true or truer than the original statement.
